This is invariably why I love the Midwest. The sky is always changing. I remember growing up hearing people say,"If you don't like the weather in the midwest, all you have to do is wait 15 minutes." There are some pretty amazing things happening these days, and right now all I have to do is concentrate on what is happening at the moment. It's a great feeling.

J gave me a hot tip on some cicada shells she spotted when walking home. I brought a macro lens (one I am borrowing from the school), to see what I could get. These things are super creepy when they are leaving their shells, but the leftovers can be just as strange and wonderful.

I have a love/hate relationship with these guys. On one hand they are a really interesting to look at and on the other they kinda make my stomach turn. I wasn't expecting much but really liked what came of this. I was surprised that hairs on the legs of the exoskeletons in the top photo are still visible and must have been left behind.

Jenna's Lab

I got to visit my friend Jenna's lab today. You may recognize her from the peach and banana photos. In addition to being a super-awesome-fruit-costume-wearing-looks-good-in-anything model, she is a scientist and PHD candidate. Her current research pertains to enzymes in broccoli and their effect on cancer cells. More recently, she has been working on a project that deals with muscular development in infants. So basically, she is a model who is working to cure cancer and save babies... all in a day's work.

I didn't really include any wide-shots of the lab to protect the privacy of research that is going on there, but there were a few little details I found to be neat, among them are Jenna's pipettes which she guards with a vengeance, and a very official looking container of baking soda. The little viles are a collection of substances that Jenna has at her bench because she likes the way they look, I did too.

My good friend and costume designer, Rose Moorefield, and I bartered costumes for photographs a long time ago. I photographed her entire portfolio, which consisted of years of incredible costumes. In exchange she designed these awesome costumes for me using a state-of-the-art lightweight foam that requires no additional support structure other than itself.

This is a project I have wanted to do for at least four years now. With the help of my friend Jenna and her brother David, it finally came together. There is a lot more that I would like to do with this so if you enjoyed this and want to see more, don't worry! You will.

This past week was the first big snow fall of 2010. Lena, Mica and I decided to go out for a few frosty festivities...

Lena and I got to the park before Mica, this is a cool shot I got right after she threw a snowball at me. Briefly after that she some how ended up on the ground under the swing.

It must have been contagious...

After Mica got there we threw caution to the wind and ignored ordinance 433!

Hilarity and snowball fights ensued.

After we finished, Lena was in need of a good dusting. Mica was happy to oblige. I love this shot/ It looks like it should be in a some ski resort brochure.

Lena made amazing spaghetti for dinner the other night. Usually don't even eat spaghetti, ever. She made the sauce from scratch, even strained her own tomatoes! It was really delicious and I even got to take some for lunch.

Timpone's is an icon in Champaign-Urbana, but until recently I never had cause to go. Lena's friend Amber decided to have her birthday party there, and I was lucky enough to have Lena ask me to be her date.

I had this really delicious, but horrible looking Venison, Pork and Beef Ravioli in a Burgeoneise sauce.

Lena had some sort of Linguine with Boar, which was also good, but a little tough.

My second time ever having creme brulee, Lena ordered it extra burnt, and I like it even better that way.

Afterwards, we went to Karaoke at this bizarre Korean Karoake and BBQ with little booths that your group could rent out. ALL the videos were strange Korean remakes of American songs.

We Definitely rocked out!

All in all it was a great adventure and I was happy to share it with Lena!

Erlanger House Revisited

Outside it looks like a box, Inside is a much different story.

The bedroom has full picture windows, but they are behind a 14 ft wall so you get all of the light from the outside and still maintain privacy. Note the two twin beds, (so 1950s) and the escape latter in the courtyard (upper right).

Yes, you are looking at it correctly, there is a hold in the floor near the toilet that goes down to the first floor, no privacy among house guests here!

Here is a shot of the "hole" by the shower.

Definitely a great place to have parties. This was taken from the bedroom/loft area.

Woodland Cemetery, Quincy, IL

Recently, we took a to the cemetery where my Grandma is buried, it was also owned at one point by my great uncle, and mother used to play there as a child when they would go visit. It was really interesting, and had lots of character. Probably should have posted this somewhere around Halloween, but better late than never.

The city vault was super-creepy AND the door was OPEN.

These tiny gravestones were from residents of a nursing home.

We walked around and there were tons of monuments, one of my favorites was an amazing mausoleum, with really intricate limestone carvings.

NEW! video capabilities for the 5D mark II

Canon just released a firmware update for the 5D mark II that allows for full manual control when shooting HD video. This is a great advancement. I recently assisted on a shoot where we had to trick the camera in to using a low aperture for every shot. It was time consuming and really messed with the rhythm of the shoot.

Now it is as easy as rolling a dial. It is interesting how much image quality is affected by the shutter speed.The amount of blur in the image based on movement, as one would expect, is directly dependent on the shutter in the video mode.

I will post some video if I get the chance.

My new bike came on Wednesday! I bought it from a shop and had it shipped from Sacremento, CA. It's a fixed gear and I am having tons of fun learning how to ride it. This photo is taken in my driveway next to the tulips. Spring is great!

Monday morning I reached for an apple to put into my lunch and knocked over a jar of sauerkraut, apparently rancid sauerkraut. I cleaned it up, with plenty of time to get to work.

I hopped on my bike and my brake cable snapped. I almost ran into a mail box.

Awesome.

I was late to work, my bike is broken, and my kitchen smells like all kinds of funk.

I have been working on a few projects at the school to start reducing some of power consumption and making the school better and safer.

My boss approved and purchased LED lights (Flolight) for all of our studios. They are safer because they run cool and are very energy efficient.

Each light has an output equivalent to 500 Watts but only consumes 1/10th of the energy. LED life is also well over 50,000 hours as opposed to an average of 3,500-5000 hours for tungsten or quartz.

Its a really exciting time to be working in a place where I can be a part of a lot of positive changes that will not only save money, but improve the quality of service.

Yesterday we went to ALDI to get some salmon and snacks. This store is by far one of the most interesting budget-supermarkets I have ever been too. I love it. The whole thing is set up so that you only need one person to run the whole store. It's great.

I also am using a polarizer for this shot. I found one recently and have been playing with it ever since.. neat little gadgets. That is the reason the sky is so dark, even though it is about noon in the shot.

McFarland Memorial Bell Tower

This is a photo of the bell tower they are building on the south quad, its interesting but I can't quite figure out what it reminds me of...
I hope it sounds good when its done. I think the fake woman in from the '80s superimposed in the foreground is an excellent touch
Although amusing, it would be great if people donated money for more practical things.

It cost 1.5 million and will be 185 feet tall when completed.

Three of the Best

I haven't made many photos as of late, but here are some people I find inspiring.

Chase Jarvis, possibly one of the world's best sports and lifestyle photographers. He also happens to be fairly candid about his techniques and business practices.

Martin Schoeller (former assistant to Annie Leibovitz)has the love for capturing detail that F/64 society had in the forties, and honesty of Irving Penn. Also, He digs photographing freakily-tanned body builders.

Annie Leibovitz, Need I say more. She is calm and collected with what I would imagine would be one of the most difficult clients in the world. (having eleven assistants may help.)

I was lucky enough to acquire some work making promotional photographs for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's new Alumni Network, Always Illinois, www.alwaysillinois.org.

I had a great time making these images, and the network is exceptionally useful, considering I am still searching for a job. It's definitely worth a look if you are a recent graduate, or are already working and looking for a change.

In Junior Studio, it was suggested by the professor that these images could be condsidered as "Fantisizing about violence against women, or a Nancy Drew style of bondage I recognize that in the art world, critics will find any way they can to tear you down, and in that respect, images like these could be potentially dangerous to deal with. I think that it is a load of crap, and will make the images I am interested in and not let my work be mitigated by what the "Art world" considers a dangerous image. I will be aware of that dynamic, and most certainly use it to my advantage. It is also pertinent to address that the image of Russell, was almost completely ignored by the Professor. Draw from these images what you will, and feel free to comment, I would like to hear other opinions as well.
